Nature is God's Heartbeat
Outdoor Worship Services
Fletcher’s Cove, 4940 Canal Rd NW. Washington, DC (meet in the lower parking lot)
March-October: 5pm
November-March: 3pm
We believe creation is worship, so we worship in the wild places and graft our worship into the full, wild beauty of the wilderness. We open ourselves to the wisdom of God made manifest in the natural world.
A typical service is relaxed but reverent, includes walking, talking, and singing. We discuss the gospel together and offer contemplative time and communion. In order to integrate into the environment, we walk about a quarter mile with two stops. We walk together into the woods because the wild natural world is a part of our congregation and our worship; we want to be fully integrated into it.
Join us rain or shine—there’s no bad weather, just bad clothing! We share hot cider in cold months and cold lemonade in hot months. The natural world, including birds, fish, beavers, frogs, ducks, insects, flowers, and trees, is always part of our worship.
Location note: Fletcher’s Cove/Boathouse has a one-lane entrance/exit, so it is tricky to get into. If you’re coming for the first time, give yourself an extra 10-15 minutes in case you miss the turn.
Accessibility note: All mobility levels are encouraged to join us, but please know the trail is unpaved with a few roots and rocks. If you have trouble on uneven surfaces take special care–we can have someone walk with you! The service typically lasts about 75 minutes and it is all standing. You’re invited to bring a folding chair if you need one. For those who cannot join us on the walk, we can make video accommodations so you can follow along until we return.
